WELCOME TO SARSONS ACTIVITY CENTRE
"Friends of OMAC" now called "Friends of Sarson's Activity Centre (SAC). We are thrilled to announce that the building will remain in its current location, for use by the Okanagan Mission Senior Centre Society, City programs and the public for special events. The desire to keep the building was recommended by the Parks and Building Planning Department to the mayor and council and it was approved unanimously.
WHY IS ACTION NEEDED?
The City of Kelowna Official Community Plan (OCP) calls for the possible demolition the Okanagan Mission Activity Centre (OMAC) when they build a new multi-purpose recreation facility near the Capital News Centre and H2O. This new facility will be a great addition to our community and we look forward to its completion.
The OMAC is a completely different experience given its unique location and history. Decisions about its future should be a separate conversation.
In collaboration with the Okanagan Mission Senior Centre Society, the building was acquired by the City of Kelowna in 1973 for the primary purpose of providing activities and services for Kelowna seniors. This relationship continues today providing a valued service to residents aged 50 years and older.
The City has since added programs for all ages, as well as rental options available for public and private functions.
OMAC is the ONLY publicly owned facility on the lake shore available for rent by residents of the City of Kelowna!
WHO IS TAKING THE LEAD TO Protect and Enhance OMAC?
Friends of OMAC
“Friends of OMAC” is a community based initiative on behalf of the Okanagan Mission Senior Centre Society (OMSCS) and the Okanagan Mission Residents Association (OMRA) committed to the preservation and enhancement of the Okanagan Mission Activity Centre (OMAC), located at Sarsons Beach Park, 4398 Hobson Road, Kelowna.
The Okanagan Mission Activity Centre (OMAC) is a small structure that, with regular maintenance and renovations to improve function, can continue to provide years of valuable service to the community.
Keeping small, locally based community centers are more desirable than having just one large multi-purpose, centralized space. Preserving and maintaining already built structures should be valued for cost savings and being the most environmentally friendly choice.
